What’s the best holster for the money?
After buying your gun…deciding on which holster you’re going to buy is one of the most important decisions you can make.
There are a lot of different kinds and styles of holsters on the market right now. Sadly, many of them are not ideal for concealed carry.
But no worries…we’ll clear up what makes a good holster, the types of carrying (inside the waistband, ankle, etc), and personal recommendations for each type.

How We Chose the Best Concealed Carry Holsters
The entire Pew Pew Tactical team contributed to this post with a minimum of one month of hands-on testing of each holster with a variety of firearms, carry styles, and body types.
Not every holster is right for everyone, but we’ve included some of the most popular styles, brands, and models that work for us and the vast majority of concealed carriers.
The Different Types of Holsters
There are many types of holsters out there for men and women. Let’s tackle each of these, along with their pros/cons.
IWB – Inside the Waistband
IWB or Inside the Waistband holsters go between your pants and your underwear by hooking onto a sturdy belt.
Pros
- Keeps gun close to the body
- Lowers "printing" (visibility) of the gun
- Different locations of IWB
Cons
- Requires lifting of garment to access gun
- Harder to get a great combat grip
Another popular position with a fast draw is the AIWB or Appendix Inside the Waistband location.
OWB – Outside the Waistband
OWB, or Outside the Waistband, is when the gun/holster rests on the outside of your pants.
Pros
- Comfortable since firearm is outside pants
- Easier to get better grip
- Fastest draw
- Ideal for larger guns
Cons
- Not covert unless you're wearing a jacket
Belly Band Holsters
These are pretty self-explanatory…it’s a band that goes around your belly. For those times when you’re not wearing a belt…
Pros
- Does not require a belt
- Can conceal with tighter fitting clothes
Cons
- Can get sweaty
- Some models don't cover the trigger completely
Shoulder Holster
Shoulder holsters generally wrap around the shoulder, and the part that actually holds the gun usually sits on your support side’s rib cage.
Pros
- Great for jacket wearers
- Favorite of off-duty or undercover law enforcement
Cons
- Gun points at people behind you
- Drawing the gun muzzles people in front
- Shirts will get dirty at contact points
- Have to keep jacket on to conceal
Ankle
This method of carrying a concealed gun is great for when a backup gun is needed.
In this case, there is no printing unless you’re wearing tight pants.
Pros
- Deep concealment option
- Low printing potential
Cons
- Pants need to be fairly loose
- Hard to access quickly
- Uncomfortable for long durations

I’m a fan of “hybrid” holsters for IWB, where the gun shell is Kydex, and the backer is either something synthetic or leather.
My current favorite hybrid IWB (and overall holster) is from Hidden Hybrid Holsters.
They are a small company from OH that uses Amish leather down the road from their shop. Not a very creative name but they work…and are comfy!
The leather they choose and the suede backer make all the difference in comfort.
The thickness/rigidity is Goldilocks, right…and the suede feels better than raw leather against your skin.
I’ve tried out a couple of their options and love their single clip, Appendix Carry.

It keeps things hidden…
And I’d definitely recommend getting the “claw” attachment, which pushes the holster more into your body. You can always take it off if you don’t think you need it.
Have something bigger…or a light/laser/RMR?
They got you covered with an option that lets you go both IWB and OWB (with belt holes).
If you’re down with pistol optics for carry…their version completely covers the optic.
However, here’s a regular G19 in the 4/5 o’clock position since I don’t like it too chunky.
IT’S HIDDEN, IT’S HYBRID.
Ok, one more perk…all the holsters I tried give you a full grip.
They also have mag carriers.
I’m not huge, so the double double-stack mag carrier was just way too big for me. However, the single was perfect and really comfy.
And something for the lols…or if you really need to walk tall and carry a big stick…
Newest update…I’ve been wearing an HHH with my Sig P365XL for over 2 years, and I wouldn’t change my loadout.

The Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe was previously our founder Eric’s favorite since it’s comfy with the leather backing (don’t worry, it comes in black, too) and allows for a full grip.
Since it’s pretty large, it’s used best for a 4-5 o’clock location.
The combat cut is slightly less comfy since the grip is more exposed, but it’s what I prefer since I get a nice “high” draw where the web of my hand perfectly meets the beavertail of the pistol.

Molding the holster to what a normal human is like at the…groinal triangle (our term, lol).
They only have a few models for their Velo above, but if you’re packing something popular (Glock, Sig Sauer, or M&P), they’ve got you covered.
So, is it comfy?
You bet…I put on the holster without the clips and wiggled it around until felt very natural. Then, I installed the clips and set the height.
Here it is in action before I go into it more:
Now, the clips…there are a couple of options, but I went with the most aggressive hold with the T1 clips.
They take a little longer to put on since they will snag your belt and pants…but wow, they feel they will never come off, even in a tussle.
Here’s another angle…and you can also see the raised “camming bar” near the top left. That works like the “claw” in other designs that helps rotate the holster more inwards.
There are two other options — snap buckles for your belt or permanent loops where you thread your belt through. Less retention but easier to get on/off, and won’t scratch stuff as easily.
Got a light? They’ve got the Sagax Lux model…
It honestly felt the same in my pants as the regular Velo since it’s not that much bigger. For now, it’s only a G19-sized Glock option with TLR-7, XC1-B, XC2, and APLc lights.
Plus, it doesn’t use the light for retention, so you can use it without one too.
Here’s another angle…just a little more material to disappear into your “groinal triangle.”
For the comfiest appendix pure Kydex option yet…check out Tenicor.
They are definitely at the high end of the price spectrum.
But if you’re a serious appendix carrier who needs comfort and extreme retention…it’s probably worth it.

This holster deserves to be in its own category since it melds IWB & OWB…the Urban Carry 3 offers some distinct advantages over other holsters.
It’s the third generation of holster and has a host of upgrades compared to its previous iterations.
It allows for carrying with your shirt tucked in…plus even if it prints a little it shows up as something in your pocket.
And allows for an easy grip (although slightly higher than other traditional holsters).
Another new feature of the G3 is its “LockLeather” which clicks around the front of the trigger guard…preventing the gun from moving or flying out when pulled.
However, one negative includes having to have your belt a little looser since your gun sits underneath. And potentially some technique modifications for…bigger guys.

The Ultra Custom takes a unique approach in that it can be custom-fitted to whichever gun you want to carry.
We tested an IWB model and found it to be a great option.
This holster is leather but features a section of thermoplastic within. Users heat the Ultra Custom according to instructions, then mold it to the gun they want to carry.
After it cools, the result is a high-quality leather holster, with Kydex-like retention properties. The gun clicks into place when being holstered.
The Ultra Custom comes with a low-profile clip that can be adjusted for cant angle.
One of the best features of this gun is it can be re-heated and re-formed for a different gun.

Looking for a simple (and beautiful) leather OWB holster? Look at 1791 Gunleather’s options.
I went with the “vintage” color, and wow, is it pretty.
I may have to pick up some cowboy shooting soon!
However…I went with a little more modern P320 to try it out. It was tough to get in the first time, but after reading the instructions on how to make it fit better…it’s great.

With most of the holsters, you’ll likely get…you’ll need a great gun belt.
One that doesn’t scream “look at me” but is sturdy enough to not flex under the weight of a fully loaded gun and even extra mags.

Why Have a Good Holster?
Let’s think about some of the things the holster is supposed to do:
- Protect and hold the firearm.
- Prevent discharge.
- Provide quick access.
- Prevent theft or loss.
So, maybe instead of the original question, we should ask things like, What goes into a great concealed carry holster?
First and foremost is the concept of safety. You’ve likely heard the safety rules by now, but in case you haven’t, here they are:
- Treat every weapon like it’s loaded.
- Don’t point your gun at anything you’re not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
- Know your target and what’s beyond it.
They’re all particularly important, but for right now, let’s concentrate solely on number three…keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
I want to expand on it even more and say that nothing should touch the trigger, including clothing or any part of the holster itself. Your trigger could get caught, pulled, and cause a discharge.
That’s a bad oopsie…
Trust me when I say the last thing you’re ever going to want is for your gun to go off unintentionally. And guns have gone off when being holstered because something got caught and pulled the trigger.
What Makes a Great Concealed Carry Holster?
As I stated earlier, there are a lot of different kinds and styles on the market.
When you pick out a holster, make sure it has the following:
- Total trigger coverage
- Sturdy material
- Good retention
- Good concealability
- Handgun protection
- Skin/body protection
- Positive grip
Let’s take a closer look at these requirements…
Trigger and Material
There are a lot of holsters on the market where the trigger is not covered or is covered by a flimsy material.
So that you’re as safe as possible, it’s best to have a holster that is made of a sturdy material that covers the trigger. You want to do all you can to prevent the possibility of a discharge.
A good example of a sturdy material could be Kydex or leather. Both do an excellent job of protecting the trigger.
Kydex is basically nothing more than a polymer composite material formed to the shape of your gun with a bunch of properties that help it do its job.
Some holsters will have both materials in the form of a Kydex shell on top of a leather backing.
There are countless companies making good-quality holsters out of this material. You can’t go wrong here.
Good Retention
Another way of saying retention is that your gun needs to “stay put.”
A good test…if you stick your gun in your holster and turn it upside down, will it fall out?
If it comes out, the retention of it needs to be adjusted (usually via a screw), or you need a different method of carrying.
It needs to be strong enough that it keeps your firearm in place until you tug it out on purpose.
Concealability
Unless you’re carrying openly, you’ll want your firearm in a discreet position where it cannot be seen.
IWB, or Inside the WaistBand, holsters offer a better level of concealment than does OWB, otherwise known as Outside the WaistBand (more on this in a minute).
(Read more about the differences between IWB and OWB!)
And, as far as IWB holsters are concerned, generally speaking, appendix IWB offers the most concealment.
Think of appendix carry as starting directly in front of your belly button and ending on your pelvic bone.
Keep in mind it depends on body type, and my body is different than yours. What conceals better for me may not be a good option for you.
The best thing to do is to play around with it a bit, to find a balance between comfort and concealment.
Protection
Your holster needs to protect you and your gun.
Some of the harder materials can cause rub marks on finish over time, so keep that in mind too.
At the same time, some of the stiffer holsters may rub your skin the wrong way. While not generally that big of a deal…if it isn’t comfortable, would you carry it every day?
As a bonus while on this topic, holsters can also damage clothing and furniture if you choose the wrong type.
I’ve used metal clips on holsters before that eventually wore holes into my shirts. Plastic clips, while not as strong, do their job quite well and are gentler on clothing than their metal counterparts.
Grip
This is very important.
If your holster doesn’t afford you the ability to have a FULL combat grip on your gun when it is drawn, you need a different holster. Meaning you’ve got a high grip, can deactivate safeties, and can shoot one-handed.
You should be able to draw and fire from any position, including directly off-body, if an attacker is on top of you. I’d even suggest a holster/position where you can reach with your weak hand as well.
Again, because it bears repeating…if your holster doesn’t allow a full combat grip, get a new one.
Final Thoughts
No matter which method of concealed carry you choose, you need to practice your draw and re-holster often to make sure you master it.
As for holsters? Sometimes it takes trying out a couple to see which one fits and feels the best.

I second Mark's comment. I would love to see reviews of holsters for tucked in shirts or semi formal attire.
My one big issue with holster reviews, and in particular ones for concealed carry, is that they always assume that the carrier is going to either be wearing a jacket (shoulder holster) or have their shirt un-tucked. I would love to see a review of BWB (below the waistband) or other types (Sneaky Pete, for example) for those who only wear tucked in shirts and no jacket. By someone other than the manufacturer of the holster, because those tend to say, "Ours is best and theirs suck." And holsters are too expensive (yes, even $60 ones) to be doing a "trial and error" with nothing but the manufacturer's word on how well it works.
These must be sponsored as some of them are of the worst quality and usefulness. Hybrid holsters are awful in general and Alien Gear makes some of the worst. None of the top quality holsters are even on this list. I would never run any of those in a class or match from concealment.
True of many of the items, from pistols, rifles, shotguns to optics… a number of shameful stinkers that scream “SPONSORED!” Too bad, for this could be a dynamite site.— but it’s turned into a self-serving, shameless sell-out. I’ll never forget the raving review for a shotgun — one that was so bad, the company only made 140 of them which were all returned by customers, and promptly went out of business.
I came here for the comments. I truly believe the only ones that got reviews are ones that gave them or ones that they could get commissioned links for.

I recently bought a single clip Hidden Hybrid Holster. Your review convinced me it was the one I needed. I haven't received it yet, so I'll give you my impressions a little later. Keep up the good work.
Just finished your article on "Best Concealment Holsters"..it did not help me in my search for IWB holster for a Glock17/22 a flashlight, Holosun HS507 red dot, and a threaded barrel so its as long as a Glock 34. Flashlights and red dots are becoming the norm in my world yet the manufactures and vendors have yet to catch up ...Browells referred me to Crossbred and Craft brands, without much success, although Crossbreed had more than I have found so far. I know I'm probably looking for a unicorn...but any thoughts other than another article topic...???
Why is it that NO holster reviews mention holsters that can be used without having to wear an untucked cover garment? It would be very helpful to hear unbiased reviews of the options available to be used with a tucked in shirt, whether that be one of the below the waistband types (Urban Carry and the like), tuckable clips, or outside the waistband concealed holsters (Sneaky Pete, fanny pack, etc). It seems like almost all that's out there right now comes from those making the particular holster, so they're definitely not an unbiased source.

Hi Eric. I’m looking for a shoulder holster that I can wear inside my waders while fly fishing. I do a lot of fishing by myself and have need for personal defense. I considered wearing outside the waders, but my fishing gear would be in the way. Obviously the grip needs to face upwards to enable a downward reach inside the waders. Your thoughts please.

Consider the “tanker holster” or a near variant. Due to assorted physical limitations I could wear waist type holsters on a limited basis. The tanker is positioned better than regular shoulder rigs. I like the M3 style and have rigs made for a variety of pistols I might carry. The canvas ones are very durable as well. As I usually wear them under a vest, detection isn’t a problem. Maybe they’ll work for you.

Check out a holster called "Pistol Pete". It looks like a case carrying a large phone or I-pad. Very comfortable and I can really draw quickly and safely. I keep my S&W MP fully loaded and safety on. I can draw and take the safety off in one motion to get the shot off.

Do you have any hard-case belt holsters for a Smith & Wesson Victory? Mine is a floppy leather and I don’t like it.
Like some others here I really have come to the place of avoiding these type of articles. Yes, sometimes they do provide some good information. But invariably when it comes to accessories, like holsters, it would be near impossible to include every make and model available. So, instead of expressing my disagreements/disappointments, I would like to simply mention two companies, not mentioned, which are premium holster manufacturers which are widely known and everywhere else get rave reviews.
1. AIWB - Tier1 Concealed. 10 Stars across the board including customer service.
2. Hybrid - Black Arch Holsters. They are unique in that the kydex is a 3/4 wrap, i.e., retention doesn't vary depending upon belt tension and the leather backers (also unique) do not interfere with either draw nor re-holstering, which is a major problem with most hybrid holsters.
Look these two companies up online and do your research and you will definitely find them at least at the top of the list for consideration when spending your hard-earned $$$ and for the excellence in workmanship, functionality and safety.
I have a Black Arch and though it's spendy I am so far very pleased with the quality and performance.
Best OWB leather holster is from Kramer but there's a 16 week wait time because they are mostly filling .gov orders so I'll forgive it

Have a blade tech on my xds 45. Carried for years, works for me. Do the appendix iwb. Live in Texas, so when I go for walks I put a belt around waist and holster up. Just have my walking shorts and a t-shirt. The belt by itself works great. My wife has a hellcat I picked up for her. Put it in a bladetech, carries fine, though it is a 9mm. With a little thing like that 11 rounds is nice. Both will get the job done.
I live in a concealed only state, and frankly I don't want to carry open. I own a compact 9mm 3.2" barrel with a 12 round double stack. This gun is fairly small; and I have tried a plethora of IWB holsters. I am so uncomfortable with an IWB holster, I refuse to carry my gun.
Not as appendix, not on my side, and I can't reach my back side due to my shoulder.
I believe an OWB would be way more comfortable, but I hear so many stories about printing. It's hot in my state, I haven't worn a jacket since moving here, 6 years ago. No jacket, no sweater, not even a hoodie. So if I can't conceal my firearm with a t-shirt, and I have to be concerned about printing, then it's staying home. What is this concern for printing, is the concern for the law, or are you worried that others will know you're carrying a firearm even though it is not exposed? I've seen snowflakes make a ruckus, and at the end of it, it's the law abiding citizen, minding his own business, that get's trespassed.

I also prefer OWB to IWB and even though I live in an open-carry state, I always carry my handgun concealed because I carry for self-defense, not to prove a point or to be needlessly provocative. I wouldn't describe my state as hot, but there are plenty of months where I can wear just a T-shirt. On those occasions I wear a lightweight shirt (long- or short-sleeved) over my tucked-in T-shirt. I keep the bottom button buttoned to keep the shirt closed. I also purchased a lightweight vest that I wear over my T-shirts instead of the top shirt. It has some great pockets and if I keep something in my draw-side pocket, it weighs down the vest enough to prevent it from opening and revealing my weapon. Unfortunately, it is made out of nylon, so it doesn't breathe as well as I'd like. I'd prefer a 100% cotton one if I could find it.
As for printing, I don't want anyone to know I'm carrying, either law enforcement or the general public. That said, I've become a little more relaxed about printing in public than I used to be because I don't think most people pay that close attention to other people.

I have a box of holsters for my P365, some are just okay & others just plainly sucked for one reason or the other. Decided to go IWB carry at the 2-4oclock position suited me best. Stumbled upon Buck’s Holsters & glad I did, went with the Mini Tuck.

Milt Sparks or go home. OK, that's pretty radical but the only other holster I've liked after 30 years of buying them is one from Jason Winnie Leathergoods. Their open top pancake is quite nice indeed.
I recently purchased a Beretta APX A1 Carry gen II but cannot find a concealed carry holster. Some manufacturers offer holsters for the Beretta APX Carry which is similar but not the same. Any suggestions? I will consider IWB, OWB, or a shoulder holster.
While not officially on their list, 1791 Gunleather has a holster that will fit your pistol for OWB. I called them and they told me I could use one of their holsters (I don’t remember the exact model) for my APX Carry. It works great once you break in the holster for your pistol.

I have "that box" of holsters that didn't live up to the hype or just didn't work. I use two brands now, Blackpoint Tactical and Wright Leather Works.
I started out with an Alien Gear 3.0, and it worked fine for several years with my PPK/S. About 4 to 5 years ago my aging eyes declined to where I couldn't make out the sights in Low Light Drills, so I upgraded to a P365. Getting the shell for the P365 didn't really work as all of a sudden IWB carry became really uncomfortable. Tried a Crossbreed and it's the same. The P365 was just enought bigger uncomfortable. Switched to a DeSantis Mini Slide OWB and no problems except I have to pay closer attention to what I wear.
I've a drawer full of holsters that were No Go's for a number of guns in my collection. Seems like you just have to try and find what works best for you.
Is there a reason why we don't see TRex, Tier 1, LAS Concealment....etc? Not seeing them in this article had me thinking that either all those holsters suck, or they are purposefully left out of the article, or the holsters featured paid to be championed or lifted above all else. Either way, 2 of those options is deceitful which causes me to question the validity/integrity of the author.

Agreed, not always the biggest fan of these articles. I've tried a few on this list alien gear is right down the road from me (really wanted to like a local brand but a definite no go.) Tier 1 concealed is hands down the best appendix carry I've ever used. I've ran it with my compact mp 2.0 and now my p365xl. I've heard good things about LAS too but never tried, they seem pretty similar to tier 1. This list has to be paid for, or these guys haven't tried the above said brands yet and just don't know their getting short sheeted. But for such a big website, really no excuse.

Im sorry to be rude but this article reeks of ignorance. Either the author has never had a proper concealed carry class, or has been taking all the wrong classes, then coming here and spreading dangerous "facts".
Hybrids are bad. Pure nylon is terrible. Belly bands should be illegal, and shoulder holsters can also be dangerous, at least during the draw.
Not to mention many of the carry techniques here are either dangerous or just lousy.

Great review. My problem with some of the companies, Tenicor for instance, only makes holsters for a handful of pistols.
Excellent article. My personal choice for IWB is a Crossbreed. I've tried other brands like Alien Gear and Clinger but Crossbreed seems to fit me the best. Not saying there's anything wrong with the others, I just like Crossbreed the best.

The first holster I always purchase is an IWB from Concealment Express. Good fit and value. Then I order a custom leather IWB holster from MTR Custom Leather. Comfy, secure and extremely well made ( and more money)
My personal choice for concealability and access to my weapon is IWB - Abdominal carry for my Sig 238 (with only iron sights). The little pistol is small, thin, and the .380 auto cartridge has a variety of loads and bullet types available to deliver enough "punch" to defend myself at close range. I was very hesitant and concerned about "abdominal" carry because of where the muzzle was pointing (smile). But the deciding factors were comfort and accessibility when sitting in a vehicle and the clothing I normally wear (T-shirt and shorts). Plus - it's concealed on me when I exit the vehicle should the need arise. Again, the decision of "weapon" and "carry" position is MY personal choice, and may not be right for you, and your needs. Just throwing out a few of my considerations.

Recently purchased a Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster for my 1911. Pretty big setup to try and conceal and still get the best draw from but I will eventually find a solution. Primary concern is the front serrations on my 1911 are tearing up the leather pretty bad, I'm talking long gouges and chunks here. Is this to be expected until the proper clearance is achieved? Thanks for any insight on this.
Eric, partly on your recommendation, I took the plunge and bought a Hidden Hybrid double clip holster for my Taurus G3C. I am so glad I did so! It is the most comfortable IWB holster I've ever had. In fact, the first day I wore it I felt that it was as comfortable as the leather OWB holster I've been using since I got my license to carry.
Now I wonder if I should try the single clip model for appendix carry??? :-)
I have carried for years using Sneaky Pete holsters. They are super well built, their belts are sturdy and Sneaky Pete is good at giving you what you need for C.Carry. Over 60, slow, USMC, practice.

The Smart Carry pouch holster ($60-$100 +). Amazon has a knock off copy by DTOM for $30. Wear it like a belly band, above or below the belt line, holds the gun, spare magazine and stuff. I am a slightly disabled (working on it) old man, I feel your pain, God bless, have a nice day.
Cross Draw, OWB, Azula Gun Holsters.
Gun conceals under loose untucked shirt; gun can be held in place through the shirt; you know exactly where the gun is (in front, right under your hand); can be drawn from a seated position, or while driving; heavy leather conforms to gun and your body; very comfortable; models for very wide variety of guns; drawing is simple -- lift shirt, draw weapon; the gun is right there, always.
Spent a fortune on Kydex small-of-back and other IWB hybrids. This leather cross draw is faster, more comfortable; and easier to don and remove. Thread your heavy gunbelt around you clockwise, so the tongue comes out over your left pocket, buckle on the right (may be backward from your normal belt threading) allowing the holster to slide on or off in seconds.
Works well for me because I have a belly and my shirt drapes over the belly, creating a space for the holster. If you're slim; may not be as concealed.
One other thing about carrying small-of-back: besides being a slower draw, if you are pushed backward and fall on your back with a holstered gun against your spine, you will likely be injured, as in broken back.
I got a light bearing Centaur from Legacy Firearms. I originally went with them last year because at the time they were the only manufacturer I could find that made holsters for my particular pistol/light combo (CZ P10s with O-Light PL mini 2). After a year of carrying with it, I have to say I am very pleased. It looks very classy with black carbon fiber kydex and gold colored hardware and logo. The claw and wedge keep it situated well for appendix carry. Clipped to my black leather gun belt from Vedder it stays firmly in place and hidden with my shirt tucked or untucked, in casual or dress clothes.
The anatomical term is "femoral triangle"....but I like groinal triangle a LOT more lol. Good read
Got a Glock 19 Gen5 MOS (or other Gen5 MOS), with a RedDot Optic *and* a rail mounted light? Can not find a holster for it? You wanted the HiddenHybridHolster, but they will fit only either the Optic, or the Light, but not both? Check out Stealthgear USA (https://stealthgearusa.com/). Superb craftsmenship, and a back padding they call Ventcore. *Really* well made, and a "click fit" with their kydex that gives retention confidence. I'm not associated with the company, I dont own their stock. It's a really well made peice of kit, and you will be very glad to own it. Not Cheap.

I really like my Clinger for IWB carry of my 2.0 Shield 9.
My own experience as a 5'10" 160 lb guy is that AIWB is by far the least concealable option. Breaks my heart, too. I've tried running a G19 with a JM Custom Kydex, RCS Eidolon, G-Code Incog, and at least a couple more I'm forgetting. Awesome speed and accessibility, especially while sitting (which we do a lot of...). Doesn't print when you bend over. Also works when hiking/rucking, something that a 3 o'clock or further back rig just cannot do. That said, I was never happy with the concealment - anyone without even a scrap of SA could make that gun no problem. Claws, pads, etc...nothing gave me what I would consider an adequate degree of concealment.
OWB is fine...for shorter guns/holsters and longer shirts IF the holster is well designed and the belt is up to the job. OWB just demands far more than IWB in that regard. Definitely viable though and, critically, doesn't require an adjustment to your wardrobe. Properly fitting pants are still properly fitting. Unless you're down for tailoring your entire wardrobe to your gun, that's a pretty solid point. Dressing around the gun is the other side of "I don't carry because it's uncomfortable."
I haven't found many reviews that cover OWB holsters and how concealable they are. OWB is my preferred carry. It is just comfortable. I have several OWB holsters that are "high-ride" and conceal pretty easy under a tee shirt. It would be nice if OWB holsters were actually considered viable concealment holsters, not just range holsters.
Personally I like "Holsters For Life, LLC" small operation in North Carolina run by Betty Hamilton great holsters priced very reasonably. Kydex holsters and she can do custom jobs also. Holstersforlife.com
I'm new to conceal carry and have a question for those who use IWB holsters....do these generally work with your existing pants size, or do you have to wear a size or two larger pants for the holsters to be comfortable? thanks
It depends on the pants, your build, and the gun/holster you're using. Personally, for me with a subcompact ccw I didn't need new pants. I just needed to open my belt a little.
If you've got properly fitting pants (i.e. close fitting, borderline snug at the waist...not always the case with off the rack, especially if you're between sizes), I've found that a decent IWB rig adds an inch to the waist. If you're carrying a spare mag, might wanna plan on two. IWB carry demands consistency in that sense since you're going to need to mesh your gun and your wardrobe. The one notable exception being AIWB - negligible impact to waist sizing there in my experience unless your pants are really snug.
I hate to sound like an old school old guy.....but I am. You did not mention the superb Bruce Nelson designs such as the Summer Special and the Patriot. Nelson died suddenly a many years ago, but his designs are being made by Milt Sparks - who I heartily recommend if you don’t mind dropping almost two C-notes and waiting six to nine months (all holsters hand made to order). Alternatively, Wilson Combat makes a Summer Special for under a hundred bucks. The Patriot, by the way, was the first holster to extend out the clips for greater stability. Did I say clips? Sorry, both the Summer Special and the Patriot use leather straps with directional snaps - no popping off or damaged clothing.
I am quite surprised Stealthgear holsters did not make the list. I have tried several you listed and here in Arizona summers, the Stealthgear Ventcore IWB holster is noticeable cooler. I have worn them 7 days a week for 6 years, boots on till boots off and love them.
You didnt mention We the People Holsters very affordable light weight and comfortable great holsters also veteran owned another reason to support them.

Yo, Eric! You NEED to add Neptune Concealment to this list. I say that not as some fanboy, but as someone who spends countless hours searching for a holster that supported a particular configuration (P365XL + Recover rail + TLR4 IWB). What I found is unless you have a Glock, or to lesser degree, a Crimson Trace, you're SOL on light bearing holsters.. The one I went with also came with an optics cut (which will be great when I get an RMR). Color options were no additional charge iirc. Only gripe I have is the belt clip on the mag carrier stretched open over time, but that was no biggie to replace.
I would like to CC but as an xxl guy I haven't found anything that works. I also wear my pants a bit low so waist band holsters are not an option. To make things more complicated it's damn hot where I live 8 months/yr. I'm thinking the Brave Response Belly Band might be an option, but wear it higher around my rib cage with the weapon under my arm. BTW,an article on CC for fatties would be great.
The urban carry has always interested me but with the new lock leather version I’m worried about sliding a striker fired handgun, with no safety, into it when I know there’s something in there that’s going to grab my trigger guard. Seems like you’d be risking it pushing your trigger too, but I’d like to hear what you guys think about it/have experienced. You forgot pocket carry holsters. I have a CCW and it's been my preference for years. You never have to worry about someone seeing your gun and it probably elicits less suspicion from a potential adversary when you reach for it. He probably thinks you are reaching for your wallet as he demanded you do.

The fact that nothing of the retention variety for OWB was mentioned is a little disappointing.
I am a bit disappointed that you guys didn't even mention "Black Arch" holsters. IMO, they are the premium holster makers for quality, design, comfort and reasonably priced. In my many years of carrying a firearm, Black Arch is hands down the best you can buy.
Best I have found is Urban Carry Lock Leather holsters both IWB and OWB. Can't believe you missed them! Also have a Craft custom made shoulder holster

Like many folks, I have a drawer full of holsters that I no longer use. No one has come close to my Kramer Leather custom made holsters. I have IWB, OWB, and cross draw Kramer holsters for each of my two EDC handguns. They all work perfectly for me; they are easy on the guns' finish; and they are pieces of art. They are molded perfectly for each gun and they stay open for re-holstering.
I'm surprised Vedder Hoslters didn't make the cut.

Regarding IWB holsters, I've read several articles on these but unless I just missed it, haven't seen anyone mention how much larger your pants waistband must be to accommodate the holster. Any general rule of thumb?
It really depends on the gun and the holster, but generally, you're looking at about 1.5-2"
Usually one pant size bigger. I'm a 38 so I buy size 40 waist for IWB carry.
Another option is tru spec pants they are designed for iwb carry. I get my normal size 36. There is a sliding inner band kinda like slacks. Best cargo pants ever.
Great article, lots of info but most of the companies have limited availability as far as some of the not on the popular handgun list goes.
If you don't carry a popular handgun your limited in your choices.
Alien Gear seems to have the largest selection but that also causes them to be slower in delivery.
I received my holster from Clinger in about a week but I'm still waiting on Alien Gear and its been over a month.
Just a couple other aspects that could greatly influence holster choices.

Nice article. BUT I usually carry my Ruger LCR .38 Revolver and you don't seem to show holsters for revolvers much anymore. It would be nice to have another great article on revolver concealed carry.
Okay, I need some help! I m looking for a multi purpose holster. I am left handed, shoot and would like to carry ambidextrous. And I while I am running about 240+ but losing weight, I want to be able to carry both in and outside the waistband.
So, there it is, who can help me find one holster that will do it all? Oh, and to complicate the issue most of the time I will be carrying the Springfield 9mm Hellcat OSP, I will also from time to time be carrying the Ruger American Competition 9mm.

Please, please, please give the JM4 Tactical Magnetic retention holster a look. Never again will you worry about "dumping" you weapon on the bathroom floor, dropping trow, mid squat. Metal mags stick to it. Flashlights stick to it. It sticks to the steering column of most cars and trucks should you need to stash your weapon. It's the only IWB holster I've ever owned, so it's hard to call it the best ever. Most everyone who tries mine out, loves it. Made in TEXAS. Abilene to be precise.

I was disappionted Crossbreed charged for combat cut, as I think the draw is compromised without it. My #1 for hybrids is Theis, what CB calls combat cut is standard. I'm also not a fan of your OWB choice as all of the gun width is outside the belt. I find ones that split gun width half and half are much tighter to the body, in leather or synthetic.

I have to say that, in my experience, the best concealment for IWB or OWB has been with AlienGear holsters. I just last week recieved 2 OWB belt holsters from AlienGear, hoping they'd come close to concealing a Sig P365 backup on the Left, and a primary 1911 5" on the right. If I wore a baggy shirt 2 sizes too big, maybe.
Clinger OWB holsters are much smaller, lighter, and pull grips closer to body, hence concealing better. This is in my experience. I'm 6'2, 280, bit of a gut, carry at 4 o'clock and/or 8 o'clock.....just sharing experience, not intending to argue with anyone here....

Sig P238, Sig P239 and Glock 34. Yes you can carry a Glock 34 with a proper holster and belt.
A great feature of HH holsters is that you can change it around and have an OWB holster. I did this for a tactical handgun course.
I suggest paying extra for the polymer J hooks. The hooks keep your holster secure inside your pants so that when you draw your handgun you don’t draw your entire rig.
I use a Sticky for IWB crossdraw. My EDC is a G22 and this holster holds it in position and comfortably. Its easy to readjust from my pocket. I'm 49 and have a dad belly but this holster let's me sit, walk and drive.
I am having an impossible time to find a left handed IWB holster for a Glock 19 5th gen with Crimson Trace LL-807G. Any suggestions? Only one I've found so far is made by Crossbreed but it seems like a large overall print against my body. I am a small frame guy.

It sounds like you don't like shoulder rigs. Consider the downsides of the alternatives...
There you are sitting on the toilet when all hell breaks loose; ohmygawd, my IWB is on the floor tangled up in my pants, I can almost reach... oops, I'm dead.
Or sitting in the car with your small of back totally inaccessible, or your appendix carry or belly band tied up in the seat belt.
Sometimes reholstering can be a bitch but a well fitted shoulder rig (and I'm with you on Galco quality)makes the weapon easily accessible whether you're sitting in the car, running down the street, whatever, and you don't need to worry about a suitable belt; jogging pants and shorts are easy options. And you can usually easily draw with either hand.
FYI.... I have heard in some areas that if your concealed carry prints its considered open carry to LEO's. Not good in Commie areas of the USofA. Also with a baggy shirt a Blackhawk Serpa makes a nice level 2 containment piece at an excellent price point. Great list anyhow. So many holsters so little time...
I've had a bunch of training from many different instructors. Guys who train thousands of people for years on end seem to learn a lot about practical carry. The vast majority of them do not like hybrid holsters for multiple reasons, and they all hate nylon holsters and belly bands. HATE EM. There's a good selection of youtube vids explaining precisely why so I won't get into it here.

Stealthgear USA holsters are pretty hard to beat in my mind. I'd like to see them reviewed. And the Relentless Tactical belt is too thick and too large of a buckle for my tastes. It ends up printing more than my holster and is really an overkill belt if all you're carrying on it is a compact pistol and a spare mag.
Stealth Gear Ventcore is my go to. Can't believe it wasnt on the list. Must have pissed someone off.

Try the JM4 Tactical. Magnetic clasp is easy on, easy off. Not sure I want try anything else from what I've read.
YOU didn't even mention any Vedder holsters. These are the most comfortable holsters I have ever warn. And you didn't mention MaxxCarry (formerly Cardini). These are the highest quality leather holsters I have ever owned.

I've been carrying since 1975. I have lots of opinions... but two are at the top. If you carry "Condition One" (think 1911) a thumb strap may well save you missing a big chunk of your right cheek! PS... Galco Jackass... worth every penny. Bought mine 20 years ago... still my favorite. l gave away all my other should holsters! My advice? Try a lot of stuff on OTHER PEOPLE's Dime. Go to your favorite gunstore and "Put the holsters on" and walk around. Not fool proof, but I would have saved a fortune had I done this! If you have been carrying - KEEP IT UP... ALL THE TIME (OK, shower and breakfast table excepted!) I can tell you from experience... When you least expect it... I'm lucky... he missed!
The Basics: Holsters must be comfortable, concealable, secure, and fast. Comfortable is an individual issue and hence preference is often based on body shape and size. Adjust-ability of the holster can come into play. Concealable and fast can work against each other so each person has to find the compromise that works for them. (A standard for fast is to draw from concealment at the buzzer and hit the target in the vital 8 inch circle 3 times in 3 seconds within the 3-7 yd zone where 95% of attacks occur.) Retention means that the holster will retain the handgun in the situations a person might encounter. Hence LE usually requires additional retention.
Beyond the Basics: Cost is likely to enter into the purchase as is the quality of materials. Each of us has to make our own decision as to the amount we have and are willing to spend (beyond getting the basics listed above.) The wear on the surface of the handgun is also a consideration and each of us will decide how important it is for us.
So - what I wear may not at all be right for others as there are many decisions to be made. I, too have a drawer full of holsters. However, I have very much enjoyed a Kydex holster made by Rooster available through Etsey. The only down side to this holster is the wear kydex causes on the surface of the handgun. Now I own three leather holsters (OWB, IWB, Cross Draw) made by Kramer Leather. They are magnificent holsters in all respects and I consider the cost well worth what I get. I know the criticisms of having three different holsters. However, when I am going to be traveling in the car often and long distances my practices focus on the cross draw holster; when the weather is cooler and clothing allows I practice and wear the OWB. When I need the greatest concealment I practice with and carry the IWB. They all have the same feel in drawing from the holster.
We are fortunate to have many choices and each of us has to weight the criteria for importance for ourselves.
Holsters are so personal agreement is rare. For any belt holster i want a “sweat guard”. It allows me to index reholster not against my skin and best path back into holster.
For IWB I am a big fan of hybrid holsters but for me Thiess holsters is the best. The neoprene on Alien just adds thickness I don’t need, rough out leather is fine. Crossbreed are nice but you have to pay extra for a cut in leather backing for improved access to grip Theiss does on all his. I don’t like all kydex for IWB, I have some Blade Tech which I consider best of the best but the side against my body is very uncomfortable.
I’m not an appendix fan. You can tell me all day about improved accessibility. But I have a gut and also don’t like the gun pointing at major arteries.
For OWB I like pancake style, synthetic or leather. Nothing else I have founds holds the gun as close. In synthetic the Blade Tech Total Eclipse is great, lots of adjustments and can deal with optics on guns like many of mine have. Regardless of cost (except for lack of sweat shield) the cheap Glock factory holsters are crazy good.
I also for some occasions like ankle carry, specifically G26. Lighter guns work in more options but for this one nothing came close for me to Galco Ankle Glove with calf strap. I know it has a thumb break but if you practice not a big deal.
I really wanted to like belly bands. I had a few. Maybe it’s just me but the outer surface is so slippery I could not keep my pants from slipping down.

Sorry,but the bravobelt bellyband is superior to the ones listed. I carry a full size 1911 in mine and its perfect. Even when jogging. Im going to get another just for the 43 i get soon i think. I like when even the biggest guns Feel like they disappear.
Why did you not cover the pocket holster? Just not a fan? I love mine for my .40 Shield. I can put my hand on my gun with out anyone taking notice. I live in the city and if an argument brakes out between two people in a store I like being prepared if it gets physical. If someone sees me reaching under my shirt or in the back of my paints I’m now involved and my have just escalated the situation. On the other hand standing with my hands in my pockets is fairly non-Threatening. Just a thought. I love the article as a whole though.
My personal favorite is the Nate Squared brand (N2). One of the most comfortable IWB holsters I've ever carried with and they have models specifically created for just about every common type of handgun.
If you've never tried one, do yourself a favor and check one out. You won't be disappointed!!
Nate Squared is THE BEST! Makes Crossbreed look and feel like bargain bin holsters from a gun show. I've owned many of the holsters above, and none of them come close to Nate Squared. I mean, who else is putting memory foam in their holsters? Has anyone ever (comfortably) fallen asleep wearing an IWB Alien Gear or Crossbreed? I do this fairly often with my N2, as I forget to take it off before I lay on the couch (because it really is that comfortable!) Only company I'll go to for IWB options now.

Josh I have beat. I got my first .22 when I was four. Trained by the best ( my Dad and Grand Father). I was taught to wear and use my pistols and revolvers in the cross-draw holster. Even did so during the twenty-three years of military service. After looking at the holsters above, I didn't see any of them that I liked. None looked like it would work as a cross-draw holster
I have been wearing an Urban Carry IWB holster for my new SIG 365 for the past 2 months. Very comfortable holster! I wear it with my regular 501's and there's no problem. You don't have to go to a larger pants size at all.

I'm another one who can't believe that Alien Gear is considered a "best" holster. I have a few of them and they are adequate. The Cloak Slide is a real pain because no matter how you tighten the belt loops it moves too much. There are much better holsters on the market. Although I have some kydex, my preference is for leather. The author didn't even give consideration to some of the better leather makers (not all of them custom). For OWB, Desantis makes a good holster.

I agree that there are so much better holsters than Alien Gear. Not knocking them but I don't like the material they use for the backer. I much prefer a natural leather. I've been carrying the Shield for a few years now (since it came out). I have friends with crossbreeds and I thought that's what I wanted, but I recently got an Exarchy Holster Patriarch IWB hybrid holster with a horsehide backer. I'm not sure why I waited so long. SO Comfortable. Best Holster I've ever owned. Easy to conceal and tuckable. The standard clips are similar to crossbreed but without the cross on them. Some people don't like the advertisement. I actually use the ulticlip on my holster. Another awesome product for concealed carry. Lifetime warranty too. Check em out.
Alien Gear also does great IWB in my opinion. They are comfortable for all day carry as well as easily customize-able for a perfect fit. As for the best gun belt hands down is Bigfoot Gun Belts. They make awesome steel-core belts that are also stylish enough to wear for dress up functions. Both are made in Post Falls, Idaho, which means USA made.
I purchased the JM4 Relic along with the JM4 Belt. So far I am pleased.

Wow. I'm surprised by this list. Alien Gear as the number one pick? Are you kidding me?! There are so many better holsters on the market that are far better quality with superior fit & finish. G-Code and Bravo Concealment are two that come to mind, just off the top of my head. There are many more, though. I don't know if I can trust a list that has Alien Gear, holsters known for their hardware breaking, as the top pick. Glad I have more sense than to follow this feeble list blindly. Some of the companies listed are ok but the best? I don't think so. I disagree with with all the picks on this list.
I enjoy different opinions on any type of list. If no replies from average users of a product, makes me question the supplied information. A site that would edit any replies because of a difference in the outcome is one I don't care to read. The outcome of gun/holster type/shooter body type/position of where worn is a variable that leads to a high number of outcomes. I exclusively use Huckleberry Tactical holsters. Billy Hux can meet all your custom kydex needs. He is a great guy who stands behind his products. He has great lead times, and a great selection of products and options. I would recommend Huckleberry over any other. Give them a try and you will see.
Anyone have experience with Clinger holsters? I'm looking at the V3 No Print IWB for my M&P Shield 2.0. Looks like a lot less material than, say, Aliengear, but I'd appreciate some 1st hand opinions.
It is WAY LESS material. It is hands down the best holster I've ever used. And I've tried them all. Hybrids suck. They are so SWEATY inside the waistband. I only carry full kydex holsters after trying every holster style you can imagine.
There are a couple of dozen decent kydex holster companies out there but only 3 or 4 really good ones.
Clinger's V3 No Print Wonder is the best of them all. It has dual belt clips just like the hybrids do but it is SO MUCH SMALLER. Plus it conceals better than anything I've ever seen before.
I don't usually endorse any product so much unless it really really deserves it. I won't carry anything else ever again. I love this holster more than my pistol. It makes concealed carry easy.
Sorry, maybe I am just old school, but I prefer leather rather than jumping on the Kydex bandwagon. I feel you short your readers by ignoring many quality holsters out there from trusted makers such as Safariland, Galco, (the one shoulder holster you mention as "vertical" when the pic posted is a horizontal) Milt Sparks and many other production and custom makers. A quality, fitted holster is generally more secure and comfortable to wear all day rather than plastic which digs in and also mars your gun. I do have a couple of Kydex holsters for a couple of Glocks that I have, but most of my guns ride in fine leather.
I’m glad I took advice from a LE buddy who highly recommended CrossBreed Supertuck. This was about 6 years ago and since then I’ve let 2 other friends try mine to see what it feels like and they both bought CrossBreed. Buy Quality the first time and save yourself money and more importantly you are more likely to carry it more often.
I am a huge fan of Urban Carry Holsters. I started with them when a shooting pal suggested their IWB gun holster and this was it. Now, I am the proud owner of two IWBs and one OWB gun holster from Urban Carry Holsters.
Since you are a glock enthusiast. Check out the Raven Vanguard 2. People don't like it cause only covers the trigger but couple it with an equally dubious clipdraw/technaclip. It works quite well. Retention is very good and there is no "holster" to print. The vanguard has better retention i've found vs the other brands. I find the clip + lanyard works better than the belt loop combo ... especially for clearing before the trigger is exposed.
Glad to see Concealment Express on your list! My first iwb holster was by Concealment Express, and it worked very nicely. I actually cheated and used it for owb (purchased iwb for opposite hand) before actually getting an owb. I recently got a new iwb by Garrett - it's leather-lined kydex. I carry a VP9, and this holster is a bit slimmer (smaller imprint) and my gun sits a bit higher so it's not digging into my thigh when I sit. The other great thing about this holster is that the leather makes it completely quiet when I draw. This was an anticipated advantage - I love this holster :)

I'm surprised that you don't mention any of the kydex holsters that are adjustable such as Harry's Holsters or Vedder Holsters, both of which are adjustable for ride height and cant. . Both I believe are adjustable for -30 to + 30 degrees of forward or backward cant, have adjustable tension and full trigger guard.. These holsters also are available with multiple mounting options to accommodate untucked and tuckable shirts. Having a holster that will sit where and how you want it to is half the battle to finding a comfortable holster that conceals well. Kydex holsters that are not adjustable are very limited as to where you can use them and still be comfortable. Many of the hybrid holsters that have huge leather backings such as the supertuck crossbreed can be very uncomfortable especially in warm or hot weather. If you sweat a lot you might want to avoid the hybrid holsters and opt for kydex, or a holster you can use somewhere other than the waistband. The right holster depends on many factors such as your body type, where you want to wear it and how you dress as well as the gun you want to carry. Just ask anyone who has a big box full of holsters!
You say that Relentless has the best belts (wrong!) but in your belt reviews you say Daltech are the best. Well......Check out Relentless gun belt customer service reviews! Better hope they don't send you a defective or even worse, a used belt because you'll be stuck with it. They do not respond to email. All those 5 star Amazon reviews are from paid reviewers. Read the one and 2 star reviews, not the 5 star. If you want a belt that will do what it was made for (and was made in the USA) look to Daltech. They stand behind their belts and will actually communicate with you if for some reason you need to return it, and if you shop around you can get one for half the price of a Relentless belt..
The big problem in carrying a concealed carry is bulkiness. Holsters are hard to hide, hard to wear and can be hard to get to. After spending hundreds of dollars on holsters, I don't and won't ever use one for concealed carry at the waist.

Alien Gear... Jack of all trades, master of none. If you want an oversize holster which is larger than necessary and gives you the opportunity to trade out plastic shells to fit any of 100 pistols, than this is your company. If you want a custom tailored, job specific, best of breed, and absolute top tier construction holster - than reach out to Tom at 2A holster. Just know in advance his website does not do his holsters any justice. If you can name a holster brand, I have probably owned it and sent it back to the company under their return policy. I take a holster seriously, and if it's not the best quality and design for my body type and intended purpose, back it goes to the manufacture! The ONLY holster I have not sent back to the manufacture is 2A (note: I have returned 8 different holsters in just the last 6 months to various other companies). Tom ask for your waist measurements prior to making your holster, and his design and kydex quality/hardware absolutely raises the bar on quality. You are only shorting yourself if you don't take a serious look at his holsters. Good luck, and I realize every pistol owners needs are different and we all have different body types. May your next holster purchase be as successful as my journey to find Tom at 2A in order to complete mine. Note: I have absolutely NO affiliation with 2A holster, but I am a damn happy customer!
Edit: I just realized that their IS one other holster which met my expectations, and I did not send back to the manufacture. This was a Garrett Holster out of Texas, another VERY high quality holster. Also know that I have no issues spending a $100 on a holster. I have three different Kriss Sphinx pistols, a Sig Legion, and an HK P2000SK, among others. I buy what I believe is the best, so the price of a holster is immaterial to me.
I prefer a simple houston clip on for my Taurus PT709 Slim for IWB carry. I used a Mikes for awhile and though it worked ok just tucked into my waist it never felt very secure. I also use the Ruger supplied pocket holster for my Ruger LCP II when I pocket carry. For IWB with that pistol I use a #10 Mikes clip on. Both work well. I do have an Alien Gear IWB for the Taurus but don't use it as much. It is not as comfortable as the Houton.

The problem is not all of these companies makes holsters for every gun out there. If you get an off brand or one that isn't as popular as say a Glock, you won't be able to have a kydex holster made.

Good stuff, Josh. Thanks. The one area I think IWB makers don't pay enough attention to is the clips. When my shirt is tucked in, they're the only visible part. This is why I would not choose the Crossbreed - the clips are large and have crosses on them. People would constantly be asking me what they're for. I wear the Alien Gear. The clips are relatively low key, but they're black. 90% of the time, I wear a brown belt. I wish these makers offered more choices that blend in better with everyday office wear. Good article, but one cautionary comment regarding belly band holsters. Most of the belly band holsters, even with the "universal" gun fit, will not fit a handgun with a light/laser attachment...I tried a few and they did not work.
(note: Crossbreed belly band holsters can custom fit a kydex insert with a light/laser.)

Stealthguard IWB S&W Shield can use 1 belt clip and adjus appendix carry for sitting. I need my belt tight so my pants won't fall down especially when carrying
Have you ever heard of Hidden Hybrid Holsters? They are the best concealed carry holsters I have ever used. They Have adjustable retention whether you carry IWB or OWB. Their double clip holster can be carried either way. I carry a full size pistol all day long comfortably.

Count me in the I don't like the 2 clip holsters camp. I have a White Hat and an Alien Gear 2 clip and really just do not like them at all.
Gary B hit the nail on the head when saying they are a major pain to get situated. Not only that but neither of my IWB 2 clip holsters have any retention if you loosen or undo your belt. Also retention while belted up is wholly dependent on how tight your belt is.
All of my single clip IWB's have screw type adjustable retention that work independently of how your belt is adjusted.
I have at least 35 holsters, a few Nylon pocket holsters that are better than nothing....I guess.
I have a Ankle holster by Crossbreed that seems to be well made, mine is a Medium and too small so it does not work for me.
I have a number of Alien Gear Cloak Mod Paddle holsters and they seem to work fine except for my Ruger American Compact. With that gun inserted into the holster a slight twist of the grip will lock the gun in place. It will not come out! A simple twist back, and out it will come as pretty as you please. Some would call this a feature, I would not.
Other OWB are various leather for revolvers, they all work. And Kydex, mostly Blade-Tech, and they work.
IWB are Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 1.0. 2.0, and 3.0, and a Crossbreed Super Tuck. holsters with two outboard clips. I am not a fan of any as they a pain to get situated, hard to get your cloths on, Once done they are okay. Too much time for me to use regularly.
I do have a leather OWB for a full size 1911 and it works well other than those two outboard clips,
All my other IWB holsters are single clip Kydex. I have a few Blade-Tech Klipt holsters that work good and are inexpensive and the only way to change the retention would be a heat gun to reshape the Kydex. They have a pretty good retention from the factory though. I settled on Cook's as there clip seems superior to me. The wide clip seems to hold the position and cant better. Plus the bottom end of the clip has a full width ramp that glides over the belt when putting it on, and provides a way to slip your finger tips under to take the holster off, gun and all. Cook's also allows retention change via a screw. They cost more.
The number of comments on holsters clearly illustrates why each of us probably own more holsters than we will ever use!

As far as one poster saying that their hardware is junk and breaks, I've bought four and use them all the time and never had anything break. I finally had to buy a Crossbreed for one gun that I carry quite a bit just to see what the fuss was about and to be able to see if my theory was correct and it is very nice but I don't see all the hype nor two and a half times the price of the Aliengear.

Alien gear as your best pick?! Pathetic. Although your article was somewhat informative, you holster options are less than desirable. Alien Gear is known for its hardware that breaks, bad choice of materials on their part. So many better companies out there like G-Code, Bravo Concealment & Raven among many others that outshine AG by a long shot.
Don't overlook the IWB from Stealthgear, it's amazingly comfortable
I WILL BUY (5) FIVE! - One for each of my 'carry' guns ... IWB holster that allows continuous 'Rotation' of angle 40+ degrees left AND right of vertical carry. This type holster would work on hip, appendix and cross-draw carry. It can be made to attach to a shoulder holster harness, Vertical & Horizontal, at desired angle. Now; IF I could just FIND such a holster! ... :(

Another great article, Eric. The only thing I felt was missing was *how* to appendix carry, and what to use. I usually carry a full-sized P226 IWB at 4:00. Once I needed to carry appedix style on a hiking trip, because my backpack's waist strap was in the way. I tried using my Alien Gear IWB holster by putting it at the 1:00-2:00 position. Long story short, I had a massive bruise on my leg, and figured I would never appendix carry again. Luckily, later I looked up what I did wrong. I think more people would also benefit from knowing just a bit more about appendix carry.
