Ok, so we had to kick this list off with the OG, the one that started it all…the Glock G17. A full-size, 9mm model, the G17 is available in all multiple generations. (Don’t know the difference between a Gen. 3 and a Gen. 5, head over to our Glock Generations article to get the low-down.)
The G17 is the gold standard for most law enforcement, and its reliability has made it a winner in the civilian market.
From carry to home defense, the G17’s larger style makes it a perfect pistol for self-defense and personal protection. In fact, I use the Glock 17 as my preferred bedside pistol because the full-size build helps mitigate some recoil and it’s got plenty of room for accessories like lights.

The Glock 19 is remarkably similar to the G17 but on a slightly smaller scale.
This midsize model is versatile and easily transitions from the range to concealed carry with its double-stack design. Again, it’s seen wide use in the law enforcement realm and, like most Glock products, is renowned for its ease of use and reliability.
Not to mention, the 9mm chambering means that, in non-ammo shortage scenarios, you should be able to easily train with it alongside its standard 15-round magazine.
The G19 also benefits from a wealth of aftermarket support, so you can switch sights, triggers, and slides if you so choose.
I carried the Glock 19 for many years. While its blocky ergonomics aren’t for everyone, it is a solid, reliable pistol — perfect for CCW. Not to mention, its popularity means there’s no lack of holsters available.

Coming in with a subcompact style, the Glock 43X MOS is another great CCW option if you need something slightly smaller than the Glock 19 and want something red dot ready.
The Glock 43X MOS sports the Glock Marksmen Barrel found on Gen. 5 Glocks, which is said to improve accuracy. While we’ve never had any issues with accuracy on older gen Glocks, this might be a selling point for some.
The most notable change in the Glock 43X MOS (over its predecessor, the Glock 43) is that this model’s grip has been altered so that you can now get a full three-finger grip on the gun without a magazine. This means a better overall grip for most shooters.

Some people love their .45 ACP, and who are we to tell you you’re wrong? If a .45 ACP is what you want, then the G30 SF is the Glock pistol for it.

There’s something cool about shooting 10mm. Whether you’re doing it on the hunt or at the range, it’s a fun round!
Luckily, Glock has a few 10mm offerings up its sleeve, but our favorite is the G20.
With a capacity of 15 rounds, the G20 is a full-size model with 8.07 inches in total length to its name.
The barrel measures 4.61 inches, and the total loaded weight is 39.86 ounces.
While the G20 only comes in the Gen. 4 variant, Glock does offer an SF, or short frame, model.
You still get that 15-round capacity with the SF, and most of the measurements are on par with the G20.
But the SF downsizes the receiver’s circumference at the rear for a little more ease when shooting.

The G42 comes chambered in .380 ACP, which means there’s little to no recoil while shooting.
This subcompact offers a barrel length of 3.25 inches with an overall length measuring 5.94 inches. The weight rests at 15.87 ounces loaded.

The trade-off for such a small handgun, though, is capacity. In the case of the G42, that means 6 rounds. Probably want to stock up on the spare mags…

Ok, so I know the G44 is controversial. I’m sorry to all the fanbois who wanted a Glock PCC but instead got a .22 LR. Don’t throw hate at me.
The G44 burst onto the scene with a .22 LR chambering. According to the company, they wanted to introduce a gun specifically for first-time gun owners and those that put in a lot of training reps at the range.
Mimicking the size of the G19, the G44 comes with a 4.02-inch barrel and an overall length of 7.28 inches. Loaded with its standard 10 rounds, it weighs 16.40 ounces.
While you most likely won’t be packing this in your IWB holster, the G44’s strength comes from the fact that you can easily plink with it.
Normally, .22 LR ammo is cheap and easy to find, making this gun a perfect training companion.
Not to mention, the .22 LR has virtually no recoil, so first-timers will find this comfortable and less intimidating to shoot.

Glock History
We would be remiss if we didn’t at least touch on the history of Glock. Since it is a powerhouse brand, we feel we kinda owe it to you to explain how they got to where they are.
Glock began in the early 1960s, helmed by Gaston Glock.
At the time, pistols weren’t really on his mind. Instead, the company manufactured wood, steel, and plastic.
Fast forward to the groovy era of the 1970s, marking Glock’s entry to the world of weaponry — specifically, knives, grenades, and machine-gun belt links.
It didn’t take long for the wheels to start turning and by the 1980s, the Glock 17 emerged.
While it wasn’t the first polymer pistol to land on shelves (that honor belongs to HK VP70), it was the first one to be a big hit.
Before you knew it, law enforcement was arming up with the plastic fantastic and its stellar 17-round magazine.
So, why has Glock maintained its stature?
Well, like it or not, the pistols are affordable and reliable. Two things that make both government agencies and civilians fall in love.
Since Glock’s emergence into the firearms community, the brand has continued to release new models based on the tried-and-true design.
Whether that’s upgrading generations or producing new models in different calibers (I’m looking at you G44), Glock isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Final Thoughts
Glock pistols set the standard for polymer, striker-fired pistols. With a range of calibers from .22 LR all the way to 10mm, you’re guaranteed to find a model that fits your needs.

I have a number of Glocks, a real fanboy !
My favourite is the Glock 48 MOS, I think it’s the best CCW out there, it can’t be beaten. Accurate, concealable and immediate co-witness with iron sights.

I have the 30S, which I find superior to the 30 and 30SF, due to thinner slide, so little lighter and no difference in recoil from the others that I could tell.
Also, have the 43X, also have the OEM 48 slide and prefer it with the longer slide, not as snappy and no real difference for me for appendix carry (Tenicor holster is essential same for both, even the one made purely for 43X is same length, simply cut down in the front (not the side closer to body, same length).
For the best .380 Glock, the Glock 25 is now available in the US. A Gen 3 19 with a .380 barrel. 15 round mag, easy to handle, and reliable.
My favorite Glock is a PSA Dagger Compact in .40 caliber.
How come no mention of the g45?
I think it's the best of the 9mm for all-around use. Just my 2 cents
My favorite Glock is a newer release, although many hardcore DIYers & gunsmiths have been producing them for a while, that being the Glock 49. Personally, I enjoy a compact frame A) for concealability & B) because I don't have the biggest hands, but I also like the balance & longer sight radius of a full sized slide. I'm a fan of this sort of configuration in almost ANY pistol & will buy one if I see one I like. I have a CZ P10 SC & a Shadow Systems MR920L & love them both! I also have a Walther PDP compact with a 4 inch slide, but plan to buy a 4.5 inch slide for it. I'm utterly befuddled as to why Walther DIDN'T offer the compact with all 3 configurations like they did with the full sized line (4in., 4.5in. & 5in. for the full size line, but only a 4in. & 5in. in the compact line).
I'm wonder why you guys left out 40 S&W ? There are so many of these still being used as people's
everyday carry? Maybe im.oldcschool but I want the perp to go down hard ! What's your reasoning for not listing tnis important series?

Glocks have no aesthetics. They look like a brick with a handle. I prefer guns that look good. I have four Glocks, so I have nothing against their reliability. They are just ugly.

The Glock 30s comes only in Gen 3, and being a southpaw the G30 Gen 4 is ambidextrous.
I like the way the Glock remains open after the pistol clip has no rounds left. The weapon appears designed/made/created for easy reload.
The sight/aimer on the barrel of the weapon has a big white dot that is easy to see. :-)
Glock MOS gen5 slides on Nomad frames with Kineti flat face triggers…that’s the right fit & feel for me! And like the 43/43x/48 frames upgraded to Shield Arms Z9 or S15 capacity.

Your article was articulate and quite informative. I own a few Glocks and have been very pleased with their performance. But to hear a female viewpoint, especially a woman highly skilled in martial arts, I find very encouraging. It’s been difficult at times to convince my girlfriend to show any interest in firearms for self-defense, much less continued situational awareness of her surroundings. Therefore, I constantly worry about her personal safety. Thank You for setting a prime example for all women to follow.

Everyone list the G19 as the best. The G26 is the correct answer in 9mm. 10rounds to 33rounds. G30 .45 power but less snappy than a G27. G21 .45 or 10mm with a conversion barrel Note: Gen4 in a G21 offers a slimmer grip (like a SF)and a better recoil spring design. As for the G43... Why? trigger sucks and 6rd count is sad, the Sig p365 is so much better of a gun 10rds, size, with a better trigger
. One thing never mentioned in any Glock articles is Glock perfection is only achieved after you change to a 3.5 connector and a extended controls with Night sites also. YMMV
I have a first gen Glock 17 that is great to shoot but my favorite is my Glock 40 Gen 4 MOS with a Trijicon red dot sight. That 10mm pairs nicely with my CMMG Banshee Mk 10 with interchangeable magazines. What’s even better is that I live in rural NW Georgia on 32 acres of land outside the city limits and can shoot anything I want at any time. It’s a firearm enthusiast’s dream scenario.

Very surprised the G45 didn’t make it. It’s my EDC and I love it.
Same here, it’s the perfect cc for me. Few little mods and it’s amazing so far.
I picked up a glock 48mos last month and stock its maybe the most accurate semi auto pistol I have. I was blown away. And I own a 17C that shoots flat as hell. It since has had a swampfox sentinel and threaded barrel with a tyrant comp so it's even better.
I picked the G45 Gen5. It's the perfect fit between the 17 and 19. I updated the trigger and added a red dot. During the Ammo shortage, I added a dryfire mag and MantisX. It has helped increase the accuracy at the range with live fire. G45 should be on that list.
Not to be left out in the cold, I had to get a Glock too... Seems everyone had the full/mid sized - and I tried the17, 19, and 21 at my local range - but I was looking for a smaller powerful package and was absolutely thrilled when I picked up a 27. Albeit a little fatter than I care for when carrying concealed (abdominal), the little beast in .40 S&W - 8 rounds packs a helluva punch. Best yet - The first time I pulled the trigger on the 27 I had a "death grip" on it figuring I'd have my wrist snapped off... far from it... due to it's ergonomics and heavy weight, it was a comfort and a joy to shoot - accurate too for such a small handgun. I got the mag extension so my pinky has a 'notch' which greatly improved the "feel and control".
I’m also a fan of the 26 and 27.
The Glock 26 can use Glock 17 and 19 magazines if you need larger backup reloads and the Glock 27 can use Glock 22 magazines.
Where I live I’ve seen both Detectives and security guards carrying the Glock 27.
However I had a female friend who had very weak wrists and she couldn’t handle the recoil from a Glock 17. She went back to starting with a 22 LR and doing exercises to build up her wrist strength. Everyone will be different so it’s a good idea to try before you buy.

Mike is right there are other Gkicks that did not make the list . I have several number of them . From the Glock 42 to the Glodk 17 GEN4 . I like them .
You left out the G48 which I know is a single stack but she feels great in the hand and shoots like a dream. You also overlooked the G22 a very nice well respected 40 caliber pistol.
I purchased my first gun about 9 months ago. I got the Glock 48. Got a little over a thousand rounds through it. I’m hoping the price of ammo will start coming down soon so I can go out more often
I have the glock 43x mos, put night fusion glow sights on it and a carry clip back plate, got a caa micro conversation kit for it but it doesn't work with the sight plate on. Overall good gun.

I have to say picking a favorite Glock is like asking me to pick my favorite child. Being retired law enforcement I've carried both the Glock 19 gen3 and G22 gen4. For on duty carry I'd puck my G22, off duty my G19 gen3. Now I'm a big fan of the G48 which I carried concealed until my wife made it hers as a Bail Bind recovery agent. My next purchase will be a Glock 42. I did find the G43 a disappointment, difficult to draw was bad enough a little to small and snappy for a 9mm.
I’m not sure you’d gain anything with a G42 if you’re disappointed with drawing a G43, they are almost identical in size, with the G43 slightly larger.
I love the glock line up. I love the G20 in 10mm im a big boi so I want a big bullet. But when it comes to canceled carry im going with the 19. Its just a perfect range gun with my lady who also shoots it. Glock needs to make some future changes. Not just size and calibers but one with innovative materials maybe 3d printing titanium or carbon fiber for frames the costs are coming down. Just don't the glock to end up like the 1911. A classic but not as practical I guess. Its time for innovation. Anyone else agree? Its getting into tye same time periods where other designers are taking the lead
I am in the love'm category. Started with a G21, then a G30, went to a G36. Carried them all concealed. The G30 and the G36 are so close in size I went back to the G30 (11 vs 7) as my EDC. I am old school, bigger is better, so that is why I carry .45 A.C.P.. My first gun was a Colt 1911 way back in 1954 I was 14 then. I am almost 81 now and still shoot fist sized groups at 7 yards. That is the longest sight line in my house.
As noted, the G45 is an ideal combo of size and shape for a 9mm. I've got 12 Glocks, from the 17 through the 45, and the G45 is, for me, the best all-around (exempting CCW).
No 19X or 45??? SMH
The first Glock I carried on duty was a G19 in 1991. Over the years I carried the G17, G22, G27, and G34 on/off duty. My favorite for duty use was a toss up between the G17 and G22. As a civilian I carry a customized G19 on a daily basis.
Which holster do you use with your 19? I’m carrying my wife’s LCP Max in my pocket because I have never found a comfortable holster for my 19 or 45. I’m 6-1, 205 lbs, so not too overweight for IWB…. Former military, so I carried OWB and shoulder only.

Agree. Wasn’t sure when I first got it, but it is a terrific pistol, especially with a red dot.
My G45 gives me a better grip and 2 more rounds than my 19, and better target transition than a 17. I still carry the 19 more, but I love the G45!
What about Glockzilla???? No way that should have been left off the list..... 10x better than the snappy 20.... no comparison... and much more accurate for hunting

Gen 3 G21 here. Love that feeling of raw power and hard kick, comes down right on target. I have big hands and the G21 fits perfectly. Too big for concealed carry though, so I got a G42 as a nasty little surprise for the street. Wish Glock manufactured an AR too.

You didn't mention a Glock 22lr pistol. I have a Glock 44, 22lr. I use it for my league shooting! a little picky on ammo I have to use a high velocity, 40 gr to avoid misfires. But I recommend it for a plinker.. I can practice a lot more with 22lr ammo

I have a question concerning the trigger set for G48. Unfortunately the mentioned Overwatch Precision TAC Trigger is not available in our country but I can buy this one. Do you think it is still worth buying? To be honest I have a problem with the grip a little bit and I´ve heard that the trigger upgrade might help. In fact, I am still shooting a little bit to the left. Nothing serious for defence purposes but I am still angry with that. I tested G48 with other friends and it looks like the "left" problem does not concern me only. Any opinions would be nice.

Have you tried different back straps for grip? I haven’t read anything about glock triggers causing left tendencies. I’d be looking at a barrel upgrade first.
People might think me crazy for saying but I'm a fan of the glock 22 ... not only is it a forty but I have 2 conversion barrels to change it to 9mm and one for 357 sig.. 150 for each barrel and for 450 dollars I bought the postols... but 750 $ and I have 3 guns in 1.. can't do that with but 2 glocks 22 and 23.. pretty sure..

This is why my 1st Glock, a G23 stayed with me for so long.
A conversion barrel with mags & it is 9mm or just a barrel change & it’s a 357 Sig.
Mine ran flawlessly in any caliber.
You kissed off the best carry gun as an afterthought -- the G42.
With an ETS nine-round magazine and Xgrip shim you've got 10 rounds aboard a gun that barely weighs a pound fully loaded. The expanded magazine also provides a much better grip on a gun whose stock grip is too small for total control.
Loaded with 90 gr. Underwood Ammo's Xtreme Penetrators from Daniels Defense at 1200 fps, the .380 ACP competes very favorably with 9mm.
I wouldn't recommend the G42 for strolling around drug- and gang-infested neighborhoods but in my opinion 10 rounds should take care of thugs pretty much anywhere else.
G30 is a plastic bric, nothing feels like a Sig Select or Gold Cup Colt 1911...

I have a gen 3 17 and a G42 love them both I’ve shot the G19, G43 and the G48. Loved the 19 and the 48. The G43 I found the trigger to be very uncomfortable to my finger due to the way it rubbed or possibly pinched my finger between the trigger guard and the trigger. I don’t notice it on my G42. I positively HATED Glock pistols when I shot my 1st one back in the late 1980’s. Probably a Gen 1, I don’t remember, but I thought it was as comfortable as a brick. When I took my carry class the instructor had a G19 that I was allowed to try. If there was a paradigm shift in a persons thinking, that was it. Sold!
I recently got the Glock 45 Gen 5 and mounted a Holosun HE507C-GR optic on it. I have had several Glocks ( 21, 41, 43 and 17) but this one is my current favorite. The Holosun has been flawless so far, and I like the auto-on / auto-off feature, as well as the auto adjust lighting level. And green! Come on!
Oh, and as an alternate platform to the 10mm G20, the Springfield XDM is worth a serious look.
Yeah, after doing a ton of research on what my first weapon should be I ended up choosing the Glock 45 also. Basically because it's just a Glock 19 with better capacity. The longer grip works better for me too.
the article says the 42 is a single stack. my 42 is a double stack.
i always thought glocks were ugly and never planned to buy one but i was in the store looking to get a taurus spectrum last week and ended up taking home the glock instead. of all my 6 handguns the 42 is the most pleasurable and accurate to shoot at short distances.
Your G42 would be the only double-stack G42! Glock only produces the G42 in single-stack, the double-stack .380 pistol from Glock is the G25 and it is not sold in the USA. You might want to double-check your Glock ;)
I have never shot a glock I am sure they are nice to shoot and reliable as well but I think I can have a carry weapon that is plenty reliable for a lot less money like the ruger security 9 compair it to the gl 19 just as reliable no where as ugly and almost half the price that does it for me keeping in mind I am allowed to change my mind if I ever have the chance to fire one

I got a G17 gen 5 about a month ago and I must say it's a lot better than the Gen 4 I had. I'm a bit Sig fan I have a P320 and P226 but that G17 is awesome!

That said, I am looking to pick up a G21/45 upper and LW conversion barrels so I can shoot every major caliber out of this platform in the future. Doesn't hurt to have options.
But if I find a G40/10 upper first, then I'm nabbing that, instead. Bring on Glockzilla! Options are overrated, anyway.
I have 2 GLOCK 21's 1 iis from the 80's and it still workd=s perfectlly !!! i have a compact 40,2 glock 19x's and an older compact 9. a sub compact 9,40 for ankles. my family was strically 1911's. once I showed them what glock can do now they own glocks.
so my daughter is a Federal Law Enforcement officer who scorned Glocks and preferred Sigs & HKs because of the double action. I bought a 23 for the wife and she thought it was a bit to much for her. My wive prefers the 19 so I left the 23 for my daughter to bring to the range and now even FLE officer admits the .40 is a pretty nice gun. I have to say though that daughter's p226 is also a nice gun.
ummm g45 is the best of the g17 and g19 gen 5.
I own a G20 and a G26. The most reliable pistols I shoot. They fire any ammo I use. Would not trade them for anything except maybe another Glock.
What about the G34?
I bought my first Glock about a year ago pushed a little bit by my son. But I got the 19x and love it. Thou my hands are not very big I manage it very well. Will be getting another one hopefully soon.
I too bought a 19x about a year ago. I had mixed feelings about it until I put about 500 rounds through it during the course of several range trips. Simple put, this is a great pistol! (On another point; the magazines also work extremely well in my Ruger PC9 Carbine.)
Good or best accurate on a range, I always try to support American industry. My S/w 357 is fine and I carried it at my Two Detroit and Miami business.
For my "duty firearm", I carry a Glock Mod 22 Gen 4 (.40 S&W cal.). It has good stopping power and it only slightly has more recoil. I barely notice it.
For my "off duty" I carry a GLOCK Mod 27 Gen 4 (.40 S&W cal.), The difference in recoil between the 22 and the 27 is again in my opinion negligible. I do confess to having medium sized hands. I would not recommend it to women although the local Sheriff's Office does carry the GLOCK mod 22.
As to the 9mm, It is a perfectly good round, now a day's as the advances in ballistics has advanced probably 10 fold. I do own both a GLOCK 17 and a 26 (Gen 4) which I have used for competition.
I've been a 40SW fan since mid 80's and my first police trade in G23.....later added on a G27 for concealed, and recently the big G35...also have a major inventory of 40SW ammo so have leaned toward staying there. Recently bought threaded 9mm conversion barrels for the 23 and 35 along with extractors, etc. just to have less expensive range cost....but also to be diversified if 40 dried up....also to have good secondaries for my new Banshee in 9mm and suppressor. Just for grins, I also did a 357sig barrel for the 23....same mags..........hitting power and diversification
What, no G23 in .40 S&W? It’s compact, a good shooter, powerful caliber, and it’s mags work in my .40 S&W Keltec Sub 2000.
My thought exactly. When I read through the article and didn’t see the 23, the writer lost some credibility. The 23 is the ideal weapon.
Same here. I canned my 9mm years ago when an LEO friend of mine had to use his on a monster sized perp. The perp took his now empty Glock from him and beat him with it. The perp eventually passed (at the hospital) from several wounds, but not before he put my buddy in the hospital as well. Possibly an exception, but not one I ever want to deal with. The .40 is a stout yet manageable round, and I love my G23 for it. BTW, my buddy's agency went back to the .357 revolver as an issue weapon until the .40 came out.
Kat, Nice article on Glocks. I have one, a G40, 10 mm, that is exceptionally big and comfortable. I have always enjoyed revolvers, especially Rugers, 454 Casulls, 44 magnums. and 357 magnums. Your article has convinced me to buy another Glock - possibly a G43. Thanks for your concise information.
The 19 is my favorite. Over 400,000 rounds and still going. G32C is next, for self defense. And The 20 is my hunting, back up side arm.

G26 G4 Subcompact
G19 G4 Compact
G17 G4 Full-size
G34 G4 Competition
Why? And what do they have in common? All 9mm that share mags.
They are Gen 4 so they have any and all accessories or upgrades you could ever want.
That's my top 4 Glocks. (And I have all 4)

You may never reply, since I’m asking this so many months after you commented. I’m hoping maybe you, or even anyone who sees this can help me out. I want a gun, basically protection and for shooting range. My dad used to take us shooting all the time, but it’s been about 20 yrs, since I’ve shot a gun. I was thinking about getting the G26, possibly the G19. Do you have any advice, as to which would be the better option, for the purpose I have mentioned. In a situation of defense, I want to know it has enough power to stop someone. Thank you, to anyone who takes time out to answer me.
Respectfully disagreeing, the FBI has recently concluded.on common sense... Bigger bullets cause bigger holes=people dying faster with less rounds. Fascinating concept. So logically without further ado, I suggest the Glock 21 SF(.45 ACP), Glock 41 Gen 4(.45 ACP), Glock 20 SF(10mm), and Glock 40 Gen 4. All used domestically, and internationally as not only Law Enforcement issued but as Military Special Operations as well. Not only does .45 suppress more effectively due to already being below the sound barrier, 9mm isn't stopping polar bear's anytime soon (10mm). If you want to be like the NYPD and carry a bunch of ammunition (9mm), shoot a bunch of rounds to overcompensate for your underpowered ammunition, miss a bunch of times due to having to shoot a volley of weaker rounds to no effect, and hit a bunch of innocent people... Then by all means 9mm. Just look up every organization, department, agency, regiment, division, company, squad ect. that has come out against, or completely moved away from 9mm for lack thereof. Don't believe professionals? Look up wound tracks and cavities for the .45 ACP and 10mm compared to any 9mm. The instilling of common-sense unto the ignorance of masses uneducated on the topic of my profession is complete.
Actually not accurate at all. Many LE agencies and the FBI have transitioned back to the 9mm. Check into it yourself, please.
That's why the FBI decided money beats performance, and went back to the 9. That way, when they are on their cell phones begging bad guys to surrender, or telling the bad guys to run and hide from Republican professional law enforcement, the 9mm won't over burden their pants..

EDC g19, combat pistol g17. Still rocking the gen 3. No reason to switch both work great.
I know that at one time the Glock 34 was a favorite among IDPA competitors.
