Called a “pistol grip” since they resemble the grip angle of pistols as opposed to traditional rifle grips; for most, the pistol grip is more ergonomic, not to mention more “normal” looking on an AR.
If you bought a stock AR-15, it most likely came with a standard A2 grip. That often feels a little too skinny and cheap.
It’ll do fine, but there are too many affordable options out there that will fit your hand much better.

5. BCM Mod-1 Gunfighter Grip

Optics Related Accessories
1. GBRS Group Lerna Mount Kit
Some people in the gun community giggle about the tall risers that are making their way onto the market lately, but if you know the why behind their design, it makes a lot of sense.
Professional shooters have been moving away from the hunched shooting positions of old that limited sight and in particular, peripheral vision. Add in the complications of gas masks or night vision, and there’s even more reason to elevate the head to get a good sight picture.
The Lerna, from GBRS Group, does just that–bringing your optic up a full 2.91″. This height enables a more upright shooting posture and heightens situational awareness.
This riser is built tough from 6061-T6 Aluminum and even features a keyhole, so you can still use iron sights. The sides of this feature are serrated to prevent glare.
The Lerna comes in FDE or black, and is available for select EoTech, Trijicon, and Aimpoint optics.
2. Blackout Defense ONEX Risers
The folks at Blackout Defense make some outstanding products and their motto is “where science and manufacturing meet”. They currently have two different heights of optics risers that are simple and effective.
Made of rugged 7055 Aluminum, these risers come in 1.93″ and 2.3″ to help you line up your optics based on need. These are great for helping you get the right height to establish sight picture while using night vision or a gas mask.
The ONEX also features a view through channel allowing shooters to revert to irons if the optic fails. These risers come in six different colors but are only available for Aimpoint Micro footprint optics at this time.

Common knowledge when you buy a handgun it has to feel good in your hands. Why should it be different with an AR grip. Magpul nothing special. Changed my stock one to a Hogue, much better, until I tried a ATI X1 AR Recoil Grip. Bought a second one for my other AR. Others may not like, I find it perfect
I've gotta voice my opinion here...
The Stark OneGrip and Strike Industries Grips are two of my favorite AR grips. The Stark feels molded specifically for my hand and the Strike Industries offers plenty of grip angles and a rubber texture. Strike has by far my favorite angled forgrip too.
The Magpul STR comes out on top of the Vltor IMOD because the STR doesn't pull beard hairs.
And lastly, BCM's rail covers blow the other options out of the water.
Of the "Best AR-15 Pistol Grips" on this list:
Magpul grips (all of them on this list)... one of the worst things you can use if you have carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis.
Tyrant Design ... one of the worst things you can use if you have carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis.
BCM Mod-1 ... not too bad for carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis.
Hogue Overmold ... better for carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis.
If your carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis isn't too bad. like minor, repeated frequent use of the Magpul grips or the Tyrant Design can make it worse over time. And if your carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis is a more than minor the Magpul grips or the Tyrant Design will aggravate it and continued use will make it worse over time. There is just a bad angle here for these grips that sits right at the improper angle that relieves pressure on the carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis plus with the Tyrant Design 'skeletonized' thing with the change in grip surface 'tension' contact stability across the hand it causes small movement of the hand surface against the grip on those that causes pressure on the carpal tunnel or De Quervain tenosynovitis by the same grip surface tension not being evenly distributed across the hand.

Lots of good choices and suggestions. Personally I really like the Luth-AR Chubby. The palm swell seems to be perfect for me, enough that I've put one on three different guns.
My personal "Rule of Thumb" has been when in doubt, you can't go wrong with Magpul, so the main furniture on my ARs is Magpul. I do like the MOE grip with the storage module because its great for storing batteries or other small parts one might need.
All 4 Handguards I have are PSAs House brand. I don't know who makes them for PSA, but they say they're made in the US. All are M-Loks and all my guns are free float. All were under a $100 at the time I bought them. Being on a tight budget, that has a major influence on what I can afford.
I' ve only 1 gu n set up with a bipod, and only 1 Harris, though I do have a short M1913 rail on each AR, so it could be swapped out if necessary.
I use the QD sling mounts already on the Handguard and the buttstock. Except for q Blue Force Gear, my other slings are house brands. One's a Pew Pew. One 2 of the guns also have the rear plate that accepts a single point sling for keeping hands free but the gun ready to go
That's it. Other than a 2nd short Pic rail to mount a light, a Streamlight PolyTac and it QR mount I keep on 2 guns, I don't have a bunch of swag on any gun.
What's the rail cover you guys have pictured on the DDM4V7?
I think its pretty crazy that the ergo grips didnt make the grip list. I dont have a ton of experience with other grips, but me and a friend both put that ergo on our first builds and its been our favorite so far for sure.

Good article that at least gives those who are starting out a solid place to start. Might I also mention Luth-AR's line of furniture. Have one from their MBA line and a couple of their pistol grips (The Chubby) for my AR-10/15 and Ruger PRC.
Y'all leaving the BCM Gunfighter grip out is crazy. For the money, it's hard to beat.
Barry- Totally agree and thanks for bringing it up. For me the main feature is the little tail that covers the SUPER annoying gap in the trigger guard. That has caused significant distraction and a bit of pain (and brings home the point that gloves are just about mandatory, at least for me).
Just installed mine and it's the tits- perfect fit and excellent positioning for my hand. The texture is awesome. I might wish for a 'stickier' compound like the MagPul grips but so far it actually hasn't been needed.
What is your opinion on the ZION-15? I have heard great things. They come standard with B5 stock and grip.

Magpul Magpul Magpul!!! Yeah, they make pretty good stuff. My money on best stock though is the Daniel Defense collapsible stock. Rubberized cheek weld is very comfortable and just looks sleek.
One stock I think everyone should consider is the A1 length fixed stock. I got a Brownells Retro one and it's really nice.

Curious that you left out some great equipment. This article did not seem to be that well thought out. Dudes, you cats ate normally spot on, but no mention of the Luth-AR MBA? May need to look into a lil jb weld for your pipe...
Props for mentioning the Houge grip, it is indeed a terrific step up from milspec. But what about the collapsable buttstock that is often sold with the grip? Same grippy overmold, decent checkweld and lacks the rattle that sometimes happens with Magpul. Also has three quick swivel connect points for slings. I mean, what more can you ask for @ ~$70 for grip and stock from OP?
How about the PWS ratchet castle nut and QD end plate combo (Brownells #100-031-925)? This is the slickest setup I have seen and eliminates the need to stake the castle nut. I have seen very few folks (myself and many gunsmiths included) who know how to properly stake a castle nut. This product gives you a third QD attachment point and eliminates staking.

Really like this wed site I got a PSA 16” freedom rifle kit with Anderson lower that I put an A2 butt stock on and has a vortex viper scope sitting on it makes the perfect truck gun I have it everywhere I go. Why not just say I like anything Magpul. This "article" might as well been an add for them, they make some nice stuff but come on this was annoying.
Most reviews of a Magpul product are going to be extremely enthusiastic. That’s what happens when you make a great product at a reasonable price.
A small point of correction in your article, but the Magpul PRS stock can be used with both a standard mil-spec carbine buffer tube, or a rifle length tube. It comes with an adapter for one or the other. I have 2 on my long range builds, and love them for that. Heavy and expensive are the downsides, but heavy is an advantage for a range/bench gun. If you shop around, you can usually get them for a little under $200 - still expensive, but once you shoot with one, and feel the stability it offers over other stocks, you'll probably feel good about the investment.
while your review was pretty extensive and complete, you didn't mention that most AR furniture is imported, and sports a 1000% mark up. Aluminum is aluminum, and plastic is plastic. A plastic nylon sling, no matter what the clips, and buckles, is only a $3. sling! A reasonable profit is one thing, but having ten middlemen between China, Japan, etc. and the U.S. market is no excuse for the outrageous furniture prices. A whole AR with a 100% + mark up from the actual factory is only a $475. rifle. (property card value- new M-16).
I really like the Magpul PRS Buttstock, but $200 plus it is way overpriced. I don't care how many adjustments it has.
I agree the PRS is overpriced. I squeak when I walk, I'm so tight. For my latest build, I bought one on GunBroker for half price. Like new condition, and it was Kryptek dipped. It's a Gen 1 stock, but has all the features I need. Really like the bottom rail for adding the Accu-Shot Monopod.
How about the Tango Down BG-18 "Battlegrip"? Fits my hand perfectly and I prefer the more vertical angle which is easier on my wrist. It also has a small tab on the front to cover the "gap" between the grip and trigger guard that can raise a blister on your middle finger after a lot of rounds. Same price or a little cheaper than the MOE. I like it better.
The item FAB defense T-pod, is that something thats tough as in able to be trusted for a combat situation or is it mainly just a fun gadget to play with like say competition? I like the idea a lot because when you go prone if you need to change direction of shooting you grab the bipod and tilt and slide and a vertical grip should be mounted where its comfortable. Its a good join of the two.

Great article as always. I would recommend adding the ATI X1 pistol grip to your selection. I have it on my AR-10 (pic sent to you) as well as my AR-15. Awesome grip. Take care and rack on.

For slings, I am a Vickers man every time. Vickers just released a “Push Button Sling” that has QD hardware on each end. This is now my go-to. $77 at Blue Force Gear. I fasten it directly to my Magpul MOE stocks without additional hardware, and add a Magpul QD sling attachment (MAG528) for $20 to the front tip of my rail.

I like your articles and your products but some are just way to pricey for my taste. $220 for a bipod? Most people like myself are on a budget an d getting anything for my AR is a luxury

He used a Harris bipod. Those aren't too expensive. But you buy a budget bipod then it night crap out on you. I had a Harris bipod break on me while I was slinging my rifle. The rifle fell and almost landed on a rock that would had broken my optic. You get what you pay for. If you have to save for mo ta to get something nice do it. Dknt go the cheap route.

Indeed, a stellar article with expertise insight; however please allow me to offer some naive critique/Devil's advocate as I am a very novice shooter.. why is this article saturated with Magpul furniture/accessories/peripheral mods? Where did I miss the disclaimer that this would effectively operate as an advertisement for Magpul - notwithstanding, an outstanding American manufacturer? Please do not misinterpret my written tone, which is not to disparage whatsoever but rather to learn. Why is there not more variety of brands and representation of other, perhaps boutique or competitive, manufacturers? Did I miss a piece of the article that explains this or does Magpul legitimately deserve ~70% of the 'Top' slots in this category (and others referenced in other articles)? What about MAKO/Fab Defense, Fortis, ERGO, Strike Industries, Seekins Precision, or even LaRue makes high-quality polymers for furniture, in addition to many others.. Why can't the well-deserved superiority of Magpul be stated once and then explore more of the diversity of the A(r) market? Please pardon my sense of pretense; it's not even a grievance, it's just the continuous exposure to Magpul I feel could potentially start to undermine their identity as being just the ubiquitous brand that is available everywhere. I'd hate to see them[Magpul] be conflated with, like, some 'Wal-Mart' brand line of products. Or perhaps I'm just a novice shooter that has yet to truly appreciate the functional supremacy of the Magpul concatenation, Thank you for reading. Criticism of my dialogue is recommended.

magpul has a well deserved reputation for fantastic products priced very aggressively.
of the brands you listed, at least 2 of them (strike, mako) are produced overseas (not always a bad thing, but some people strike term off the list for this reason. ergo is generally (subjectively) poor quality. seeking and fortis are space age scifi designed stuff that would be at home in the next halo video game (although the quality is good, and if that's your bag, no hate from me!) larue is solid stuff and id encourage this (excellent) web site to test it out!! thats only my opinion, and its worth exactly wjat you paid for it though!
I was thinking basically the same exact thing halfway through reading the “pistol grip” section. I saw where this was headed and immediately asked myself if magpul was paying PPT. Haha. Don’t get me wrong magpul is one of the great American companies who’s innovations have changed many aspects of the shooting world. But to be honest. I am always looking past the magpul whenever possible and going with something else. Honestly I’m just getting bored with magpu and would really like to see them try something new. I know they are known for polymer but they’ve made enough money by this point they should try and expand and branch out into machining. Maybe make some magpul handguards or vertical grips from aluminum. They came out with the Mbus pro set of buis sights that I love. I’ve got a set on my favorite rifle now. That’s just my two cents though. That being said, magpul makes a hell of a quality product that most anyone can afford. For that I am thankful for magpul.
FYI, it says "Atlast" bipod in the Picture. Other then that, great article, I love this site, and I can't wait till I can get my AR.
